GIS - based Flood Risk Analysis Across Large Metropolitan Areas
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the effects of urbanization on the flood hazard in semi-arid/arid southern California using traditional hydrograph, frequency-magnitude and statistical analysis augmented with GIS-based variable parameterizations and visualizations. It was found that the peak flood discharges were significantly increased in urban watersheds in conjunction with increasing mean baseflow in the streams. Urbanization resulted in a reduction in flood duration and the number of days of storm flows after the peak discharge. The rainfall-runoff relationship has also changed in urban watersheds and showed certain patterns across the watersheds over time. This research shows how GIS can serve as a platform for characterizing the cumulative impacts of neighborhoodspecific land use changes and stream modifications on the flood hazards by estimating hydrologic parameters and integrating different types of spatial data sources. It concludes that floods behave differently in urbanized watersheds and non-urban watersheds.

This work focuses on the spatial evolution of urban flooding phenomena in Athens metropolitan area, in Greece. The study examines the locations of flood-related damages and fatalities in Athens in 1880–2010, in comparison with the city’s evolution, to identify possible changes in their spatial distribution. GIS software was used to develop a spatio-temporal database storing information on the l...
متن کاملFlood-risk mapping: contributions towards an enhanced assessment of extreme events and associated risks
Currently, a shift from classical flood protection as engineering task towards integrated flood risk management concepts can be observed. In this context, a more consequent consideration of extreme events which exceed the design event of flood protection structures and failure scenarios such as dike breaches have to be investigated. Therefore, this study aims to enhance existing methods for haz...
متن کاملUrban Flood Vulnerability and Risk Mapping Using Integrated Multi-Parametric AHP and GIS: Methodological Overview and Case Study Assessment
This study aims at providing expertise for preparing public-based flood mapping and estimating flood risks in growing urban areas. To model and predict the magnitude of flood risk areas, an integrated Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis techniques are used for the case of Eldoret Municipality in Kenya. The flood risk vulnerability mapping follows ...
